Description:
A portrait of a light coloured ox exhibiting the training of the left horn over the muzzle (ma gut).
The training of horns was carried out by intiated men on their favourite beasts to create aesthetically pleasing affects.
In contrast to his two earlier fieldwork visits when photographing cattle was viewed suspiciously by the Nuer, Evans-Pritchard took numerous record images of them during his later field trips.
The film number of this photograph suggests a location of western Nuerland in 1936.
