Some of Thesiger's porters surrounding a shot hippo, landed onto the river bank. Both his interpreter Malo (left) and his Zaghawi servant Idris (right) are triumphantly standing on the dead animal. Thesiger wrote that the Nuer prized hippopotamus meat for its fat content, and he occasionally shot a hippo to provide his porters with a treat.
