Description:

Tethered oxen standing in a kraal. To the left is an ox without markings, but very large upward curving horns, and to the right one with smaller horns and dark/light markings. Beyond a large byre (luak) is visible. On initiation youths were given an ox by their father, from whom they took a name based upon its markings or other attributes. This name was then used by his age mates and gradually by others also. In contrast to his two earlier fieldwork visits when photographing cattle was viewed suspiciously by the Nuer, Evans-Pritchard took numerous record images of them during his later field trips.
