Description:
Oil lamp made in several parts from probably different types of recycled aluminium containers, which have a base colour of metallic light gray (Pantone 877C). One of these containers was originally for an unidentified brand of Greek orangeade, with one or more additional containers used to make the handle, neck and nozzle parts; these other containers were printed with English and Arabic script.

The nozzle is made as a separate part that fits into the top of the body. It consists of a nozzle made from a rectangular piece of metal rolled into a narrow cylinder with the ends overlapping, and the decorated printed face of the can on the inside, where it is not visible; this has a white background with black Arabic lettering on it. The nozzle has been fitted into a circular metal disc with a hole crudely cut into its centre; the disc is made from a can printed with black and white motifs on a sky blue background (Pantone 2975C), and is on the upper, visible surface. Another, broader cylinder has been soldered onto the underside of this to make a stoppered base for this section. It has been cut from a can printed with a white background with a red pattern over the top (Pantone 1797C); here the design again is hidden on the inside face.

The body below consists of a short cylindrical neck, made from a piece of rolled up metal, slightly wider in diameter than the nozzle stopper so that the latter fits snugly inside. This has been cut from a container printed with a white background, with green and red Arabic writing and a yellow band, with the design hidden on the inner face. The neck has been soldered onto a broad conical shoulder piece with central hole, with no printing visible, that joins onto the lower part of a can of orangeade. The two parts do not match in diameters perfectly, and the shoulder piece overhangs the body in parts. The can has a seam down one side, and a groove around the body just above the ring base, the underside of which has a raised ring near its outer edge. This is not stamped. The can is printed in Greek on one side, and English on the other. The English side reads: 'A[...]OP/ carbonated orange drink', on a background in yellow and orange at the top (Pantone 141C and 138C), then three curving parallel white lines over a copper coloured background, with an image of an orange with leafy top, half sectioned and dripping juice. To one side, in a circle, is a logo with the company name 'Campania/ Hellas'. Along the bottom of the panel are the words: 'PRODUCED BY CAMPANIA HELLAS S.A. - THESSALONIKI, GREECE', while vertically up the side of the can it reads 'Contains: NATURAL ORANGE JUICE, CARBONATED WATE[R]/ [...] FLAVOURS, SODIIUM BENZOATE 0.06 % PRODUCT OF GRE[...], with a small symbol of a figure throwing a can into a garbage bin below. On the Greek side of the can, the image is of a half-sectioned lemon, with the top part of the background in two shades of yellow (Pantone 141C and 120C) above a brass coloured base with the same curving white lines. The product name appears the same, as is the logo and symbol; the sub-caption reads '
αεριουχσ πορτοκαλαδα ', the production details '[...] ΡΟΙΟΝ ΤΗΣ: ΚΑΜΠΑΝΙΑ ΕΛΛΑΣ Α.Ε.Β.Ε. − ϑΕΣΣΑΛΟΝΙΚΗ ΓΗΛ 491 534', and the content information ' Συστατικο: ΦΥΣΙΚΟΣ ΧΥΜΟΣ ΠΟΡΤΟΚΑΛΙΟΥ ΑΝΟΡΑΚΟ [...] ΟΞΥ, ΑΙϑΕΡΙΑ ΕΛΑΙΑ ΒΕΝΖ. ΝΑΤΡ Ο.Ο6% ΠΕΡΗΞΟΜ[...] '. Finally, a thin strip of aluminium, cut from a container with white printed background and English writing over it in black, has been bent into a loop and soldered to the edge of the shoulder and midway down the body to form a vertical strap handle on one side. The lamp is complete, with patches of surface rust. It has a weight of 44.9 grams, and is 125 mm high. The nozzle has a diameter of 7.7 mm, and a stopper diameter of 18 mm, while the neck diameter is 19 mm, the shoulder measures 68.5 mm across, and the base is 65 mm in diameter. The strap handle is 6.7 mm wide and 26.5 mm long.

Purchased in Yei market sometime between July and September 1984 by the Lutaya Expedition, a seven-member research and support expedition from the Third World Society of Oxford University, to settlements for Ugandan refugees from West Nile Province, Uganda.

For other oil lamps made from recycled containers, see 1985.24.12-14. These have all been made in the same way, and can be compared with 1998.9.7, a toy aeroplane made from recycled aluminium and incorporating a lamp nozzle of the type seen here. Note that none of these lamps have been provided with wicks.

Currently on display in the Court, case 141A.
