Accession Number:

Description:
Looking across a swept fenced courtyard with a hut, which has a raised stoep to prevent rain water entering the hut or damaging the walls. Two women sit near the entrance to the homestead, with a waterpipe and other domestic objects around them. To the right is a sunken hearth. One of the women is sitting behind a pole which seems to be notched near its top, suggesting that this is an Anuak headman's homestead.

Image context - This image can be compared to 2005.51.301 which is of the same homestead and taken from roughly the same position, with the camera turned several degrees to the right. That image shows a young man, who may be the owner of the homestead. The water pipe seen may well be the same one identified in the PRM lantern slide [Lienhardt 41] as Anuak. [CM 27/7/2005]
