Description:
A group of Mandari youths posed for the camera wearing numerous strings of rem age grade beads around the waist. In their configuration these beads showed relative age-grade status among Mandari youths. These youths probably belong to the youngest grade that wore beads (roughly ages 11-17), known as roti. Age-grades among the western Mandari seem to have been a relatively recent, loosely defined or organized borrowing by youths from their Atuot neighbours, there being no memory of age-grades or even initiation in the past. This is a significant distinction between the Tali district Mandari and the Riverine 'Mandari' groups who claim to have always had age-grade organization. In the background can be seen Buxton's Landrover parked next to a hut.
