Description:
A Nuer man holds a tether to keep a cow's back legs from kicking whilst a woman milks it, at the Lou cattle camp of Yakwach on the Sobat River which Evans-Pritchard revisited in 1935. It was considered ritually dangerous for men to milk a cow unless no women or children were available, such as on a journey, but they frequently helped with non-milking activities such as this.
