Looking over the side of a river boat (paddle-steamer?) at a youth with ash-covered hair standing next to a mooring rope and a crate, looking away towards a rectilinear building beyond that has a small toilet area with corrugated iron screen. The image was taken on the Nile at Adok, where Evans-Pritchard arrived on 1st October 1936 after making a survey of the Luo of Kenya. He then moved on to spend most of his time among the Leek.
