Description:
An upper body portrait of a smiling youth wearing head and arm ornaments tying a giraffe-hair necklace at the back of a friend's neck. The youth is looking towards the camera but not at Evans-Pritchard but rather to someone over his shoulder. The youths are probably seated on the ground since a leaning spear to the left suggests a ground level not far below the frame, with Evans-Pritchard's Rolleiflex camera at chest height and angled down slightly it gives the image a proximity and intimacy not found in many of his earlier photographs. It was probably taken during July 1935 whilst Evans-Pritchard spent 4 weeks at the mouth of the Nyanding River among the Jikany, especially at Mancom village, the home of his servant Tiop-Lier.
