Description:
A full length portrait of a Zande girl standing in a homestead, hands clasped under a protruding pubic covering. She is wearing numerous metal wrist ornaments as well as bead strings around the neck. The Makaraka (this name for the Zande of the Odio area seems to be of Mittu origin) were part of the Zande kingdom and speak a dialect of the Zande language. Buchta made an excursion to Makaraka country setting out from Juba on 7th July and returning there on 26th August 1879.

Thomas' article 'Richard Buchta and Early Photography in Uganda' Uganda Journal Vol. 25, no. 1, 1960, p. 116, he notes that 'Buchta seems to have remained at Lado until on 7 July he set off for Makaraka whence he returned on 26 August.
