Description:
Unfinished leg ornament, at the stage where it is ready to bend into a loop to form an anklet. This consists of an iron rod, round in section, that has been twisted around its body, with the spiralling groove that resulted from this gradually becoming less marked towards either end, where the rod has been hammered flat, with the tips bent over to form an open loop. One side of the body has been markedly flattened; this may have been intentional, to create a smoother surface against the skin, a feature seen on some completed forms of this type. It is complete but has some flaws in the metal at one end; it is currently a metallic gray colour (Pantone 877C). The rod has a weight of 21.8 grams, and is 309 mm long with a diameter of 3.8 by 3 mm at the centre of the rod, and a width of 3.5 mm and thickness of 1.5 mm at one end.

This object was collected by Samuel P. Powell at Terakeka, and loaned to the Pitt Rivers Museum in 1940. For another unfinished example, see 1940.7.020. Finished examples such as 1940.7.018-019 were worn by women as leg ornaments.
