Description:
Penannular leg ornament made from an iron bar with rectangular section that tapers to either end. This has been bent into a slightly oval ring, with the ends doubled over and hammered back against the body to form 2 open loops, leaving a small gap of 2 mm between. A hole has been punched through the body, on the side directly opposite this gap, with the blow being directed from the outer surface, creating a hole that narrows and becomes slightly distorted in shape at its base. This hole is not quite centred. The anklet has been decorated with two rows of incised oblique lines, chiselled into the upper and lower edges; this has forced the metal to spread slightly at this point. The object is complete and intact, and is currently a metallic gray colour (Pantone 877C), with traces of red ochre in many of the incisions and around the ends (Pantone 477C). There are signs of wear around the inside surface, particularly on one edge near the hole; this might suggest something was tied through the hole at some point. It has a weight of 75.5 grams, and measures 93 by 90 mm across the external diameter, 86.2 by 77.8 across the internal diameter, with a body width of 11.3 mm and a thickness of 3.4 mm. The hole has a diameter of 3.4 mm at the top.

This object was collected by Samuel P. Powell at Terakeka, and loaned to the Pitt Rivers Museum in 1940. It was worn by women as a leg ornament; for another example, see 1940.7.019, and for 2 unfinished versions, not yet bent into a circle, see 1940.7.020-021.
