Description:
Short necklet made from 66 seeds, each roughly spherical in shape with vertically fluted bodies. The outer surface is a dark brown colour (Pantone 7532C); this has worn away in places, exposing a lighter brown beneath (Pantone 7507C). Some of the seeds have split along their length, exposing a dark brown kernel inside. The beads are of roughly similar dimensions, with diameters of 9 mm and lengths also of 9 mm. Each bead has been perforated with a tiny thread hole, about 1 mm in diameter, and strung onto a single cord of twisted brown plant fibre (Pantone 727C), possibly cotton. This has been fastened at the top with a double knot. The necklace is complete, and measures 270 mm in length, with a weight of 23.1 grams.

Collected by E.E. Evans-Pritchard during his fieldwork amongst the Anuak, which took place between early March and May 1935 (E.E. Evans-Pritchard, 1940, The Political System of the Anuak of the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, p. 3).

These seeds come from the
Lango tree, which is said to have been introduced into the Sudan from Ethiopia by the Anuak. For other examples, see 1936.10.71-72.

This object is currently on display in the Lower Gallery, case 106A.
