Description:
Neck ornament made from two pieces of cotton or wool string, twisted together and knotted at either end; these separate around 85 mm from the ends into their two component parts, at which point narrow brass strips have been wound tightly around each strand. The necklet is complete and intact, with some dark greasy material covering the twisted string, the natural colour of which is a yellowish brown (Pantone 465C). The brass strips are in good condition, currently a dull metallic yellow (Pantone 874C). The length of the necklet between the ends of the brass wound section is 220 mm, the string has a diameter of 5 mm near the ends and 3 mm for each single strand, with a total weight of 23.4 grams.

Collected by Percy Horace Gordon Powell-Cotton and his wife Hannah on the road to Tambura on 29th April 1933, during a shooting expedition. The Zande name for this type of object is said to be
kamba.
