Description:
Food stirrer made in 2 pieces, consisting of a crescentic head piece fitted at right angles onto a narrow handle. The head has been carved from a single piece of lightweight wood, with the top, working surface shaved to create a convex surface. The sides and base have been cut flat, with the underside in particular being quite angular. The centre of the head has been perforated with a square hole, that is used to mount the handle. This has been made from a stick with the bark stripped off the surface and the surface smoothed. The head of the stick has been roughly cut, to make the wood splay out and create a tighter fit in the hole; this lies flush with the surface, while the shaft below has been slightly shaved to fit into the space. This then becomes round in section, until the base of the stick where the body has also been slightly shaved. The object is complete and intact, and both parts are the same warm yellowish brown colour (Pantone 7509C). Tool marks are visible across various surfaces. It has a weight of 40.4 grams, and is 698 mm long. The head is 78 mm long, 18 mm wide and 16 mm thick, while the shaft has a diameter of 9.5 mm.

Probably collected by Evans-Pritchard himself during his fieldwork amongst the Zande, which took place during 1927, part of 1928 and 1929 and for several months during 1930. Purchased from Edward Evans-Pritchard for the PRM by Henry Balfour on 31 December 1930, as part of a group of objects, total cost £25.

Evans-Pritchard did not record the local name for this type of object. For a similar Zande food stirrer, see 1930.86.39. Similar objects appear in other Nilotic cultures, including the Moru (1930.86.40 and 1979.20.22), Lotuko (1934.8.58), Dinka (1934.8.16) and Anuak (1936.10.47), although their methods of construction vary. This type of stirrer may be related to those used in Uganda for beating vegetables, found amongst groups such as the Acholi, Lango and Kakwa (see M. Howell & K.P. Wachsmann, 1953,
Tribal Crafts of Uganda, p. 164, pl. 39D).
