Description:
Fringe apron consisting of a rectangular body, made from bundles of twisted hide cord, doubled over at the top and bound together, leaving the long ends to hang down below. These bundles were placed side by side, and stitched together along the base of the bound areas, creating a stiff band across the top and a loose, thick fringe below. Two narrow hide strips were then sewn onto either side, and could be used tie the apron around the waist. These have been tooled over their outer surfaces, creating a textured effect. The front part of the apron was decorated at the centre with several red glass ring-shaped beads (Pantone 1945C), threaded onto the upper part of 3 fringe strands, as 2 pairs with a single bead between. The body has been heavily coated with reddish brown ochre (Pantone 7524C). The apron is complete, and has a weight of 160.5 grams. It has a length of 1365 mm, with the ties extended; the ties are 11.3 mm wide and 3.5 mm thick; the fringe body is 285 mm wide and 126 mm long; the fringe strands have a diameter of 0.5 mm, and the beads have a diameter of 4.4 mm.

Collected at Gondokoro, while it was still part of Uganda, probably by the object's donor, William Leonard Stevenson Loat, as he is known to have worked around Gondokoro during or before 1902 (see Boulenger, G.A., 1902, “List of the fishes collected by Mr. W.L.S. Loat at Gondokoro”,
Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist. (Ser. 7) 10(38) , pp 260-264).

This fringe apron was worn by women, at the front.
