Description:
A young girl milking into a gourd vessel turns round to look at Evans-Pritchard as he takes a photograph of her from below with the Rolleiflex.
He may have just spoken a word to her to catch her attention.
Men were forbidden from milking unless no women or children were available, such as on a journey, and the task was one of the most important of female domestic roles.
This image was probably taken at Yakwach camp on the Sobat, which Evans-Pritchard revisited in 1935.
