Evans-Pritchard notes that 'Shortly after my arrival in Zandeland Gböndi, the prince's deputy in the settlement in which I took up my abode, a charming but ineffectual old man, was replaced by Bage, who was younger and more efficient.' On page 339 he also notes that 'When Prince Gangura appointed a new deputy to our settlement this man, Bage, consulted the oracle to know whether he would die if he took up his position there, and the oracle told him that it would be safe for him to do so.' Archive note - this object consists of two modern 35mm museum copy negatives produced from the original print [1998.341.448.2].
As with other previously accessioned copy negatives, I have retained them within the full catalogue of the collection.[Chris Morton 10/12/2003] There is a partly destroyed pencil number on the reverse of the print which reads 4 and then possibly a 6, which may well fit as the first part of the full film number for this image.[Chris Morton 10/12/2003]
