Description:
A group of Nuer men at a dance. To the left men are joining the group using mock fighting displays with spears and parrying shields, and to the right they are dancing around two drums, one large and one small. Dances were more of a feature of rainy-season village life than cattle camps since people had more ready access to other social groups. They were regular social events, often also accompanying ceremonies such as marriages. Such events were the main arena for courtship among Nuer youth, and often took the form of mock battles and display between village groups.
