Description:
Annular arm ornament carved from a single piece of ivory, consisting of an oval ring with flat underside, convex outside face, and a flat upper surface that slopes down on the inside towards a flat inner face, where the object would rest against the owner's arm or wrist. This produces a largely rectangular section. The large central opening is also oval in plan view, with slightly irregular edges, so that the armlet varies in width across its body. It is complete and intact; the surface has been highly polished, and is a yellow colour (Pantone 7509C), except around the inside face, which shows the grain of the ivory and is a darker brown colour (Pantone 469C); this may have been heat treated, perhaps as part of the process of cutting out the centre. This surface is rough and unpolished. There are numerous hairline cracks across the surface. It has a weight of 105.7 grams, and measures 120.3 by 114 mm across the outside edges, and 76 by 73.4 mm across the inside edges; the ring has a body width that varies from 19.3 to 24.5 mm, and is 9 to 12 mm thick.

Collected by Samuel P. Powell from the Kakwa, near Kajo Kaji in the Bahr el Jebel administrative district of the Southern Sudan, and loaned to the Pitt Rivers Museum in 1940.
